Astral Projection
“The first time happened by accident. I noticed that I could see, even though my eyes were closed.”
– R.Wayne
What is an Outer Body Experience? It’s when your mind, or spirit, leaves your physical body and can move independently. During an O.B.E people have reported looking down at their own body laying in bed fast asleep while they are floating around the room.
In some cases it has been known to happen spontaneously. But it is also possible that it can be induced by electrical stimulation to the brain. Many people claim to have induced it themselves by simply willing themselves to leave their bodies. Others say they were ‘pulled’ out and left with a feeling of paralysis. This of course is what your body normally does when we sleep so that we don’t act out our dreams. If the brain isn’t conscious then the body must be paralysed.
How To Induce an OBE
We are going to look at Robert Monroe’s method that he describes in his book ‘Journeys Out Of The Body’. He introduced a method using the vibrational state which is said to occur before most OBEs. If you’ve ever experienced a feeling of vibrations or electricity flowing through you before dropping to sleep then you will be familiar with this state.
First, lay down and make sure you’re comfortable and warm and with your head pointing North and your feet pointing south (this is to do with magnetic fields). Remove any jewellery and loosen any tight or restricting clothing. Also make sure you wont be disturbed at any point by switching off phones and alarm clocks. It’s better if you do this at a point when you’re not restricted by time. i.e you don’t have to be at work or anywhere else right after. Best to do at night when you’re off work the next morning.
Now you want to use an affirmation to help you remember your experience. You must say to yourself the following:
‘I will consciously perceive and remember all that I encounter in my experience that will be beneficial to my health and well-being’. Say this about 5 times. Then breath slowly and deeply through your half open mouth.
Now you are going to try to enter the border line sleep state. Otherwise known as the ‘Hypnagogic state’. Monroe doesn’t really give detail or suggestion on how to do this but one common way is to hold your forearm up vertically. And then when your drifting off your arm will begin to fall and then awaken you. Another way is to concentrate on an object in your mind. When you start to see images appear then you know you have entered the hypnagogic state. Once you've mastered this though you wont need to use the arm technique any more. You want to try and Passively watch these images. It will help you maintain this state of near-sleep. Robert Monroe calls this Condition A.
After this he recommends that you deepen the state. Do this by clearing your mind and focusing on the black void in front of your closed eyes. You may notice colours or lights flash past now and then. This is neural discharges and have no effect so just ignore them. Once they cease you have entered Condition B.
Next is Condition C. Once entered you will be in a sort of void where your mind will lose contact and awareness of your body and sensory stimulation. Your thoughts will be your only stimulation in this stage. To achieve Condition D, Monroe suggests that you practice entering it in the morning or after a short nap. With eyes closed, look into the blackness at a spot about a foot from your forehead, concentrating your consciousness on that point. Move it gradually to three feet away, then six, and then turn it 90 degrees upward, reaching above your head. You must now reach out for those vibrations and pull them into your head. He says you will know these vibrations when you see and feel them. It’s easier than it sounds.
You now should learn to control these vibrations. You can do this by pushing them out of your head, then down your body slowly until they reach your toes, then back up again. Once you have mastered this then you’re ready to continue and leave your body.
The first time you do this you should only do a partial leave of your body. First lift your arm out of your ‘real’ arm and reach for an object in the room. Feel the object for a minute and then push your hand right through it. This exercise will prepare you for a full separation.
Now your ready for a full lift out. There are two ways to do this. One way is to imagine yourself getting lighter and lighter until you lift upwards towards the ceiling. The other way Monroe calls the ‘rotation’ where you’ll roll out your body by rotating yourself in your bed just as if your were turning over. But make sure you don’t actually turn your physical body over. Once your out of your body then just float upwards and enjoy your experience.
